NEW VIDEO: BOSS LEVEL - Part Three

Here is it! The latest instalment in the Boss Level Series, BOSS LEVEL 3!

Boss Level is an eight person rap cypher produced and curated by Alan Newman, with video direction by myself on each track. We've aimed to maintain a standard with each release, and this one has to be one of the most exciting, featuring a rota of the best emcees in Ireland - Siyo, Jee4ce, Phats, Shaool, Bitter Rocc, Mugsy and Collie alongside Jurassic 5 legend, Akil.

The first conversation when planning each Boss Level video is what kind of visual theme we're going to go for. After much head scratching and back and forth, we decided to alter the visual style we've established with the first two videos to freshen up the look. The beat has an industrial tone while still being bouncy, and luckily we managed to secure a location that fit that description. I felt adding movement to each shot would make it more engaging while still focusing on performance. And an idea I had for sometime was to use the worn VHS look, giving us a visual throwback, we used this as a motif throughout. I digitised old VHS tapes to Premiere and layered the damaged footage over our shots - clipping, speeding up and chopping it where it felt necessary for the beat and visuals. We also filmed multiple angles of each performer rapping at half speed for the "fast forward" shots in the video.

Big thanks to everybody involved! Thanks to Paul from Lafayette for giving us use of the location over 2 days, Shauna Fowley and Daniel Newman on make-up, our dance champ Matthew Williamson, the nun-chucking ninja Andy Duff and our boss ladies Jane Ngo and Ziyi Liu. NEW VIDEO: Rapthor x Alan Newman - Dogz B****x

Yesterday we shot and cut this video for a track from the upcoming Rapthor and producer Alan Newman project, The Advocates 支持者.

The album has been making rapid progress over the past few weeks, with several tracks already written and demoed.  Alan contacted me on Saturday about making the video, he wanted one take, understated. I thought something more choppy might suit and I think the result is our compromise.

NEW VIDEO: Tazer & Lion Size - Dangerous

Irish Rap/French Reggae duo Tazer & Lion Size invited us over to France this summer to shoot their latest video for "Dangerous". Producer Alan Newman and I spent 4 days prepping and shooting the video in Mulhouse, which is a city in the east of France, beside the Swiss border.

Although I thought there might be a language barrier(and there mostly wasn't thanks to Tazer and Alizée taking on translation duty a lot of the time) I think by the time we were leaving the lads knew a lot more Irish sayings then they needed to! "Savage Cabbage" being one of their favorites!

I'd like to thank Alan for setting up the project, and Tazer, Lion and the Son Art crew for making us feel very welcome and looking after us so well during our stay. We had an incredible time there - met some brilliant and talented people, got to see some beautiful locations and experienced a bit of a heatwave (38° C!!).

Here are some pictures from the trip, a great experience - Savage Cabbage!(In a french accent)

Bonsoir Francé - till next time!

'Boss Level 3' shoot and 'Funzo' Live!

Bit late off the mark here but it's been a busy week for the team!

Last Friday, 25th of June, we had an amazing night at Funzo's gig in The Twisted Pepper(Middle Abbey Street) celebrating the continuing success of his debut album, 'The Great Lonesome' (available on itunes and spotify now, go get it!). Superb gig with a brilliant line-up of support acts and special guests, highlights for me being Leiko, Jambo, Steenson and Boss Level of course!

The next morning, after one too many sambucas the night before - we all met at the Boss Level 3 shoot in the City Centre. After a lot of hydration and a few last minute bits to sort out, filming kicked off around 2pm with Jee4ce who flew over from Edinburgh for the shoot. Shortly after we filmed with Mugsy from Letterkenny, Big Siyo who wasn't afraid to bust a move and Shaool from Sligo based hip hop group, This Side Up. After a short break we filmed with Collie Collins, always a pro, and then Bitter Rocc who looked slick as usual.

The great thing about this project is I get to work with a variety of different artists from different backgrounds on the one video - some I may have known or been aware of for years and others that are completely new to me. I think one of the best things about the series is that it brings people together in a supportive atmosphere while still encouraging everyone to be creative individually.

We also filmed with Jayne and Zee, Matthew Williamson, Dancer/Choreographer from Raw Edge Crew and Andy Duff, who practiced with nun-chucks for the last 3 months especially for the video! Legend!

After what felt like a long but productive day, we wrapped at around 8.45pm - feet still sore from either being on them all day or dancing the night before!

Special thanks as always to Producer Alan Newman, Assistant Directors Dizzy Daz and Stephen Traynor, Make-Up Artists Shauna Fowley & Daniel Newman and Photographer JasonDonMatthew.

NEW VIDEO: Bushy & Woody - All These Things

Just released today here is the video for 'All These Things' by Bushy & Woody, with production from Alan Newman and mixing and mastering by Collie Collins.

We filmed this video over a day and a half around various locations in Dublin's City Centre and docklands. What got me particularly excited about shooting was producer Alan Newman's idea to choose locations that weren't over familiar to people living in Dublin - giving the video a European feel as opposed to the usual Dublin sights we're too used to seeing.

Having known Woody & Bushy for some time, it's always a different experience when you're actually working with people, and the lads were nothing short of professional. One of the biggest challenges was that I wanted to film Bushy in slow motion at 50 frames per second(I tend to do this a bit, but never for rap as it's generally too fast). This meant he had to rap twice the speed of the actual track - and now for the math(s) - during some of the lines, because he's rapping at double time already it meant he had to rap at quadruple speed! Fairly Impressive. As for Woody, his crooning and facial hair were impressive enough.

This couldn't have been possible without AD Stephen Traynor a.k.a. The Trainstation and Photographer / Driver Jason O'Callaghan, who's perfectly manicured hands make a cameo in some of the driving shots - as well as his face in some of the wider shots!

Thanks for the support as always to Shauna Fowley, who's solid advice is always "Go with your gut!" and the main man Alan Newman for making it possible.
